The name "Schoenberg" may be a bit off-putting to some, but these pieces are quite mellow.

In this concert from January 29th 1979 from the Funkhaus, Hannover, Gielen conducts the NDR Orchestra in three Bach orchestrations:-

Chorale Preludes "Schmücke dich, o liebe Seele“, BWV 654 & "Komm, Gott, Schöpfer, Heiliger Geist“, BWV 667 (both from (1922), and the Prelude & Fugue in E flat BWV 552 (1928).

The melodies and harmonies are Bach's, Schoenberg's orchestration just clarifies the part-writing and adds colour.

The Cello Concerto in D, with David Geringas as soloist, is freely adapted from M. G. Monn's Keyboard Concerto, the re-composition carried out in 1933, while the Concerto for String Quartet & orchestra was adapted from Handel's Concerto Grosso in B flat, Op. 6 No. 7. Again the adaptation is very free, but the music is always tuneful. The Bartholdy Quartet (Joshua Epstein, Max Speermann, Jörg-Wolfgang Jahn & Annemarie Dengler are the soloists.

The NDR Orchestra is conducted by Michael Gielen.
